چکیده

We report on the results of R-band observations of the error box of the g-ray burst of 1997 August 28 made between 4 hr and 8 days after this burst occurred. No counterpart was found varying by more than 0.2 mag down to . We discuss the consequences of this nondetection for relativistic blast wave models of g-ray R 5 23.8 bursts and the possible effect of redshift on the relation between optical absorption and the low-energy cutoff in the X-ray afterglow spectrum. Subject headings: dust, extinction — galaxies: general — gamma rays: bursts — gamma rays: observations — radiation mechanisms: nonthermal

The discovery of a powerful and transient iron line feature in the X–ray afterglow spectrum of GRB 970508 and GRB 970828, if confirmed, would be a major breakthrough for understanding the nature the progenitor of gamma–ray bursts. We show that a large mass of iron very close to the burster is necessary to produce the emission line. This in itself strongly limits the possible progenitor of the g...

The Afterglow and the Host Galaxy of the Dark Burst GRB 970828

GRB970828 was the first well-localized γ-ray burst (GRB) X-ray afterglow for which no optical afterglow was found despite a prompt, deep search down to Rlim ∼ 24.5 mag. We report the discovery of a short-lived radio flare within the X-ray localization error circle of this burst. Such radio flares are seen in about 25% of GRB afterglows and their origin is not well understood. The precise radio ...

We report on the very early time search for an optical afterglow from GRB 971227 with the Livermore Optical Transient Imaging System (LOTIS). LOTIS began imaging the ‘Original’ BATSE error box of GRB 971227 ∼ 14 s after the onset of gamma-ray emission. Continuous monitoring of the position throughout the evening yielded a total of 499 images (10 s integration). Analysis of these images revealed...
